February
7th February: Training for the Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) took place on site as service users and stakeholders prepared to undertake a rigorous inspection of food, hygiene and building standards.
26th February: The Trust formally presented its investigation to the Savile Inquiry – there is no allegation of abuse nor any evidence that the disgraced broadcaster ever visited the property subsequently acquired by the Trust.
27th February: Catering manager Peter Gardner gave service users a tour behind the scenes at the Trust’s kitchens, including showing them our locally-sourced ingredients and how the state of the art cooking facilities operate. Just three days later, the results of the council’s food hygiene inspections were published, giving Herbstones a full 5 score for cleanliness and environmental quality. The Trust was scrutinised in the same way as fast food outlets, supermarkets and high end restaurants. Peter received online praise from the HCA national chair.
Herbstones Restaurant delivers 9,000 meals every month. It provides hot food from breakfast time to anyone on site, as well as preparing most of the meals. Last year, major investment saw the hospital kitchens fitted with a state-of-the-art “Frima Vario” cooking centre. Peter was quoted in the press saying: “The cooker at the heart of our facility means we can prepare 200 portions of beef casserole, 200 portions of mash potato and 200 portions of rice pudding in two hours.”
