April
2nd April: On World Autism Awareness Day the Trust library promotes its selection of publications on the subject.
3rd April: Many of our nurses attended a careers fair, running a stand at Edge Hill University to promote learning disability nursing and the work of the Trust. Staff met the nurses of the future and signed up new FT members. Edge Hill’s student union vice-president tweeted that the careers fair is “great this year”.
8th April: The 2013 staff survey returned high scores for our health and safety training, appraisals, good support from management and good communication from senior management. It also noted that we have more to do. CEO Mark Hindle announced that he will be starting his ‘Big Conversation’ with staff later this month.
Mark Hindle attended the latest meeting of Trust family members and carers. Many carers had recently completed a questionnaire about how we engage with them which provided valuable first-hand information. One individual won a £50 prize of high street vouchers as a special reward as Mark drew a name at random from all those who completed the survey. Thea Stein, the then head of the Carers’ Trust tweeted: “Delighted to hear it. Supporting family carers makes moral sense but also leads to fiscal results. What’s not to like!”
10th April: OTs, nurses, service users and others attended the Care and Treatment of Offenders with Learning Disabilities conference in Newcastle. “2 exciting days of sharing best practice,” said governor and practice educator Brenda Crossley.
We were well represented and chairman Rupert Nichols led the first morning session, promoting the work of the Trust. There were also presentations on therapeutic art activities and on the model for cognitive rehabilitation. Award-winning nurse Lynsey Brown delivered her powerful and moving lecture on LD in prisons. Head of PTS, Dr Paul Withers, with a number of service users and a researcher, held a very well received discussion about our LGBT group TheAvenue. R&Dcolleaguesgavea presentation on DBT and there was a brisk trade in the service user-made video on testicular cancer.
16th April: Mark Hindle and new Director of Finance Nik Khashu attended the Easter Fayre on the step down ward, to see the women’s craft and cake making skills. The women raised £159 selling flowers and cakes.
22nd April: Mark Hindle started his Big Conversation series of staff engagement events today, meeting groups of around 20 staff at a time to discuss the Trust’s vision and values.
24th April: Mark reported on the first few ‘Big Conversations’ to the April meeting of the Trust Board.
Top of the Board’s agenda is always a service user story and this month Paul talked powerfully about dignity and respect. The meeting also heard about our commitment to high quality care.
