Patient Care
The Trust has a dedicated Research and Development Department and an active research programme that contributes to finding new ways of working and improving the quality
of services. Central to the delivery of effective treatment and rehabilitation
is person centred care, which is at the heart of all the research we undertake. Engaging service users, families and/or Calderstones staff is essential in the research we do at the Trust.
By doing this it helps to ensure that the research we do is relevant to the needs and views of the people using our services. We have links with many universities and support or collaborate in research from Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Newcastle, Loughborough, Birmingham, Lancaster, Chester, Cumbria and Leeds. In June 2014, the Trust received acknowledgement from the National Institute of Health Research recognising both an ‘appetite’ for research and an increase in research recruitment and participation.
The Trust has a history of making major contributions towards the well-being of people with a learning disability. Our clinical and non-clinical teams attend of wide range of local, regional and national conferences and events on behalf of the Trust which ensures we remain at the forefront of new ways of working and delivering evidence practice.
Recent work includes publication of the aims and achievements of our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Support Group (LGBT) called The Avenue, which focused on benefits for service users including increased confidence, self-esteem and identity pride. The Trust has also presented at a major North West research conference on women experiencing Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
In October 2014, the Trust hosted a well-received Research Showcase; experts, guests and staff heard about the Spheres of Wellbeing work and research into LGBT support in secure settings.
Further work to improve the safety and experience of the people we care for is the aim of reducing the use of restrictive interventions (RI) and phasing out prone restraint altogether via the ‘Positive and Safe at Calderstones’ programme, which comprises of three constituent
project groups.
• Safewards - aims to create a conducive culture and environment
• Prevention and Management of Violence of Aggression - focus on workforce development, shifting the focus to more preventative techniques through enhanced staff competencies in positive behaviour support and alternative techniques to facilitate the phasing out of prone restraint.
• Monitoring, Reporting and Review – focus on the process for data informed practice through multidisciplinary team review
and audit.
The Trust reports on indicators as required by Monitor’s Compliance Framework/Risk Assessment Framework. Information on the indicators and performance against the Department of Health Quality Indicators are detailed with in Section 3.2.1 and 3.2.2 (National Priorities) of the Quality Account 2014/2015. The Trust delivers against national targets and the Trust’s delayed transfers of care are well below the national target which is evident of the effective discharge planning and good partnership with receiving services. Further information about care pathway performance measures can be found in Section 3.2.2 (The Care Pathway) of the Quality Account 2014/2015.
A proportion of the Trust’s income in 2014/2015 was conditional on achieving quality improvement and innovation goals (CQUIN) agreed between the Trust, Specialised Commissioning NHS North of England, and Clinical Commissioning Groups. The CQUIN projects for 2014/2015 included:
Professor Len Bowers, originator of the Safewards Programme, visited the Trust in January and said he was “Impressed by the wisdom and skills of the clinical staff and their managers".
Moira Winters and Professor Kenneth Wilson were invited to attend our October conference by Paula Johnson, R&D Manager at Calderstones (centre).
